Google has announced that starting April 2013 it will not allow any ads with phone numbers in the text. This recent policy update has instigated a debate among advertisers. However, Google is ruling the advertisement world, so everybody will have to abide by the new rule. If you want a phone number to be included in your AdWords ad, you’ll be required to make use of the call extension feature.

Through the policy update, Google said that it will not allow phone numbers in the ad text of new ads. And for those who still want to include their phone number in the ads, they will have to exercise the option of call extension service. It made this information public much earlier than the execution of the new policies so that advertisers may make required changes conveniently.

It also assures the advertisers that no new charge is being imposed on them. With this call extension feature, the advertisers will find it easy to measure conversations. They can find details related to phone impressions, phone-through rates, phone calls and average charges of the phone calls in the Campaign and Ad Group Tabs.

Let’s understand how does call extension work. When an advertiser opts for this feature, Google will assign a unique Google forwarding number which will also be displayed with his ads. When somebody will make a call to that number, the call will be forwarded to the phone number of the advertiser. Google believes the new system will definitely benefit the advertisers in increasing their sales.
